JOE ISSA DEPARTS SUPERCLUBS

3-Joe-Issa-departs-SuperClubs-The-Observer-July-23-2003-Joe-Joey-Joseph-Issa-Jamaica-300x80Joe Issa, who was considered heir apparent to this father, John Issa, in the family controlled SuperClubs hotel chain, has made an abrupt departure from the company, the Business Observer learned yesterday.

Zein Issa-Nakash, Joe Issa’s younger sister and SuperClubs’ vice-president for marketing and public relations, confirmed that her brother had left the business but declined to give the reason. “Joey is no longer with us,” Issa-Nakash said. “That is all I am prepared to say.”  The departure of Joe Issa, 38, from the family business, one of the Caribbean’s best known hotel brands, was a seeming down side in his life that, on the face of it, is romantically on the up.

Issa recently became engaged to Asha Maglani, an Ocho Rios businesswoman who operates at least two tourist shops in that north coast resort town.

Joe Issa has developed business interests outside of SuperClubs and is the principal of Cool Oasis service stations and related facilities in St Ann.  He has also served as president of the St Ann chamber of Commerce.

But is in the hotel business, where the Issa family have been pioneers, that Joe Issa appeared to have carved a place and made a name for himself. He served in managerial positions in several of the SuperClubs hotels.

In 1998 he was appointed senior vice president for sales, and later became executive vice president for the chain of 15 resorts.

    About Joseph Issa

One of Jamaica’s most recognized business leaders, Joseph Issa enjoys a career that spans executive roles in the hospitality sector and as founder and Chairman of the Cool Group of Companies. The latter enterprise through CoolBiz fosters more than 3,000 new micro-business entrepreneurs, with distribution and retail lines involving phone cards, automotive lubricants, and everyday household necessities. Joseph Issa and his Cool Corp-affiliated Cool Card Centre introduced the EZ Card in 2003 through a $125 million investment, while his Cool Oasis subsidiary has expanded to become one of the leading petroleum retailers in Jamaica. Having studied economics and accounting at the London School of Economics, Joey Issa began his career with SuperClubs’ Grand Lido Negril, part of his family’s resort business. He moved into executive sales and marketing positions over the next decade, through which he helped position the resort chain as a leading presence in his island country’s dynamic tourist economy. Joe Issa oversaw major upgrades to existing properties as well as the opening of new properties. Among the promotions that Joseph Issa helped spearhead was a 2000 “Leach on the Beach” event that featured Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous host Robin Leach. Another novel offering was the SuperClubs Radio Remote Broadcast, which reached 10 major U.S. markets and promoted island music, culture, and tourism. Joseph Issa ensured that SuperClubs gave back to the community through initiatives such as JA/US, which focused on assisting health and education programs. His other philanthropic endeavors have supported literacy and junior tennis; the Global Education 2000 program benefited local schools. Through the Cool Charities Foundation, Joey Issa contributes donated supplies to educational institutions in the St. Ann and St. Mary Parishes of Jamaica.

Joey’s move comes after 14 years at the Caribbean’s ‘Only Super-Inclusive Resort.’ SuperClubs UK office commented `business as usual for SuperClubs, and that it is a personal matter for the family.

HEDONISM III TAKES HEDONISTIC ATTITUDE TO NEW HEIGHTS
As Bad as You Want to Be at SuperClubs’ Raciest New Resort

KINGSTON, JAMAICA — SuperClubs’ new Hedonism III Resort in Runaway Bay promises you can always be in hot water. Hedonism II, its sister property in Negril, has stuck successfully to its party-hearty adults-only concept through the wave of politically correct virtue which swept the 80s and 90s. Now Hedonism III is bursting on the scene, a pleasure dome for the new millennium, with features and amenities beyond the wildest dreams of even the most unrepentant hedonist.

With Jamaica’s first swim-up rooms, four Jacuzzis — one see-through, of course — and a fantasy four-story waterslide that snakes through the disco before splashing down in the main pool, Hedonism lil is designed for more ~ water sports than you find on the beach. In addition to the main pool, there is a quadrangle pool and an au naturel pool, complemented by an au naturel beach and main beach – reserved for the nudity-irr,paired. Water sports available include snorkeling, scuba diving with resort certification, windsurfing, Sunfish and Hobie Cat sailing, kayaking and water skiing. Best of all, since
everything is included at SuperClubs resorts, guests never need to reach into pockets they won’t be wearing to pay for activities or refreshments.

The 225 air-conditioned rooms boast their own Roman Jacuzzi bathtubs, set in marble bathrooms. Rooms are fully-equipped with direct-dial phones, satellite TV and CD players, clock radios, hairdryers and coffee makers, even irons and ironing boards in case you get rumpled.

Sizzling weekly theme parties at Hedonism III include a Pajama Party, Toga Party and Reggae Beach Party. In between, guests make their own parties at five bars with freeflowing spirits and a disco that rocks until the wee hours. With four restaurants — Japanese, Italian, Jamaican and Continental — the resort promises different dining experiences day and night. In addition, poolside grills and 24-hour “Snack Attack” packs assure that any flagging energy won’t be blamed on hunger.

To keep in shape for the serious business of partying, Hedonism lil offers the signature beach circus workshop complete with trapeze, trampoline, Spanish rope and daily classes. Three lit tennis courts are available, and golfers enjoy privileges at Breezes Golf and Beach Resort’s 1 8-hole PGA-quality course and golf school nearby, at an additional cost. The fitness center offers Nautilus equipment, Lifecycle, Lifestep and free weights plus aerobics classes. Outdoor activities include cycling, basketball, volleyball and table tennis.

“What Hedonism II was to the late twentieth century, Hedonism III will be to the 21St century — a pleasure garden of uninhibited fun,” said Joe Issa, SuperClubs’ executive vice president of operations. “We have updated the concept with the waterscape anchored by the fantasy waterslide, and rooms with every amenity demanded by disceming singles and couples. If Hedonism II is naughty but nice, Hedonism III is wet and wild!”

  5. SuperClubs terminated from Sans Souci Hotel

THE Carreras Group will, on April 30, terminate the management contract that its hotel — Grand Lido Sans Souci — has had with John Issa’s SuperClubs since 1993, and will place the property on the market for sale.

Carreras will install its own managers to continue operating the hotel under the name Sans Souci Resort and Spa, until a buyer is found, the company said yesterday.

But there is a dispute between SuperClubs and Carreras, apparently over aspects of the termination protocol, and which both parties say they will attempt to sort out, through the intervention this week of three arbitrators.

  6. US threatens SuperClubs over Cuba hotel

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration has told John Issa’s SuperClubs hotel chain that its top officers will be denied entry into the United States because of investments the company made on property confiscated from Americans in Cuba.

SuperClubs, with properties in the Caribbean and Brazil, operates five hotels in Cuba, accounting for 1,500 rooms.
A senior US official, who declined to be identified, said top executives, shareholders, their spouses and children would be denied visas, starting 45 days after the date of a letter recently sent to SuperClubs. It was not clear how many people would be affected.

Last night, SuperClubs’ vice-president for marketing, Zein Issa-Nakash confirmed the US action but sought to play down the incident.

  8. Spanish hotel chains wage a fierce battle against Sandals, SuperClubs

Spanish hotel chains wage a fierce battle against Sandals, SuperClubs and Club Med.

When most Americans make the decision to book an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, they generally turn to one of three chains of hotels — Sandals, SuperClubs and Club Med — which account for most of the marketing and advertising of one-price-for-everything vacations. The same savvy travelers have only a dim awareness of such competitive all-inclusive chains as Barcelro, Iberostar, Occidental-Allegro, Sol Melia and Riu, owned by Spanish or Dominican interests. And yet many observers, including myself, will argue that the Latino companies in many (not all) instances are offering superior amenities at a lower price.

  9. A group of dairy farmers has bought all the milk in two rural branches of Morrisons in protest at the price the supermarket giant pays for milk.
They cleared the shelves at Morrisons in Bideford, Devon, and Bude, Cornwall, then demonstrated outside with a cow.
The farmers say Morrisons pays as little as 74p for four pints, which they argue is far too low.
The supermarket chain said it had already agreed not to accept further cost price decreases from suppliers.
The protest is one of several that have been staged across the UK in the past few days. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-33751573

A Holy Cross/Jamaica scholarship is to be offered once every four years to a less privileged Jamaican student attending one of the Jesuit High Schools, St. Georges’ College or Campion College.

The primary intent in the establishment of the scholarship is to “cement the links between Holy Cross, the New England Jesuits, and Jamaica,” a news release says.
